CSCOM is a modem communication program for calling CompuServe and
downloading a file using CompuServe's B+ protocol with an IBM compatible
computer.
It isn't as complete as it could be, but it's free.
When you type CSCOM and press Enter at the DOS prompt, you'll see a menu
for entering CompuServe's phone number, your ID number, your password,
the speed of your modem, and the comm port your modem is connected to.
This information is saved in a file named CSCOM.CFG. You can use the
following 3 separators in the phone number: -(). A *70 at the beginning
of the number will usually keep other incoming calls from interrupting
your call. The comm port is usually 1 for an external modem, and 2 for
an internal one.
When you move the cursor to the top line of the menu and press Enter,
your call to CompuServe will be initiated (if you turned your modem on).
Your modem will be initialized and set for 8 bit/no parity transmission,
and you'll see "Calling CompuServe" on the screen. The program should be
automatic until the first "!" is on the screen (as an input identifier).
Then you're on your own.
When you tell CompuServe you want to download a file, and after you've
named the file, etc, the downloading will begin automatically, and a
window will show the file name, a running count of the blocks downloaded
(1,024 bytes/block), and the elapsed time. It beeps when the download
is finished. The file is then saved in the current subdirectory of the
current disk.
Using a 2400 baud modem, this program downloads at a speed of about
222 to 227 bytes per second, which is pretty fast.
Caveats:
o You can only download, not upload.
o You can't exit the program while the download is in progress.
o The file to be downloaded must fit in available memory minus 65,535 bytes.
